Sustainable Channels: Alternative Designs in the Urban Environment

Background

Lucas County is drained by hundreds of miles of ditches and modified streams. This vast, man-made network carries water away from our homes, shopping centers, and agricultural fields, making land habitable and productive. However, what if these excavated channels could provide other benefits too? What if we modeled their design off natural creeks improve stability, sediment removal capacity, and nutrient processing? What would be the cost? What about the benefits to Lake Erie...?

Workshop

This one-day workshop will focus on alternative channel designs such as two-stage and overwide ditches. The intended audience includes municipal and consulting engineers, environmental professionals, planners, and interested individuals.
