Lucas County has already made great strides in addressing many aspects of “sustainability” – how we can improve and sustain our natural systems (environment), social systems (our communities), and economic systems (our economy) for current and future generations. From the various existing initiatives to improve and protect the County’s water resources to the wide range of programs supporting healthy and local food to efforts in place to improve building energy efficiency and neighborhood livability, Lucas County has a great foundation from which to build.
Going Beyond Green intentionally addresses issues of sustainability from the perspective of the entire County, as opposed to a narrower focus on specific and individual communities. Many other regions across Ohio and the Midwest, as well as around the country, have taken similar regional approaches to collaboration and realized many benefits from doing so. These include being able to work toward common and shared goals, form partnerships, coordinate the collection of information, and share resources and expertise.
